  1. I’m ready to take on Washington! Let’s clean the house out.

    • Uh, how? Through cheap stunts and waving loopy signs?

If anyone wants to do something smart and effective, go to public appearances by politicians and engage them in impromptu debates about their policies designed to make them look bad. Then, upload video to Youtube. Please note that I’m not talking about rants, whining, booing, chanting slogans or all the rest. I’m talking about an actual intellectual debate about their policies. Obviously, most tea partiers aren’t capable of that, but at least they can help find those who are both smart and experienced with asking questions. Once again: I’m not talking about ranting, raving, whining, or all the rest. I mean focused questions about specific policy matters.

For more smart, effective ways to oppose Obama and the Dems, subscribe to my feed.

Note also that the people you’re linked in with support massive immigration. Not only does that lead to more immediate spending, it also helps build a power base for the far-left. The far-left then uses their increased power base to push for more spending. The people you’re linked in to are making the situation you complain about worse.

      • I most seriously doubt that Campaign for Liberty and Young Americans for Liberty support “massive immigration”. Congressman Ron Paul was the inspiration behind those organizations and knowing his stance on illegal immigration, it seems hard to believe your assertion. . .

        • Aside from one ad supporting border enforcement, Ron Paul didn’t make imm. enforcement a centerpiece of his campaign. And, that ad was criticized by his open borders libertarian supporters (or semi-supporters), such as Reason Magazine.

However, my comment was directed mainly at FreedomWorks. You can read about the massive guest worker plan they supported right on their own site:

          freedomworks.org/publications/the-pence-plan-no-amnesty-immigration-reform

That plan is similar to (and closely related to) one that was recently re-introduced. Just some of the many downsides of that plan are discussed here:

          24ahead.com/helen-kriebles-absurd-red-card-temporary-workers-solution

Just two of the downsides would include lowering middle-class wages and leading to an additional amnesty due to a large number of mixed-status families.

As for ATR, CSPAN broadcast Norquist at a conference sitting right next to a constellation of far-lefties (NCLR, SPLC, etc. etc.) supporting amnesty. A transcript is linked from here:

          peekURL.com/z13hyxw

As for the Club for Growth, they supposedly don’t take stances on these issues but their former president is a WSJ loose borders supporter.

As for what I think of the “partiers”, it’s based on watching them operate:

          24ahead.com/s/tea-parties

          • I am against illegal immigration, but guest workers fill a need for jobs that are hard to get workers.

You have some good comments regarding actual interviews of politicians.

      • Your tone is not helpful. If you are united with those who believe Obama is taking us into the wrong direction, then find better ways to inspire and instruct (if you think your ideas are really that crucial) people. That post is just not going to get it done.

        • so i heard about this site for msnbc
was wondering if you guys are for the gop,gov plan
          if yes
you do know that they are agreeing on several key things
also are you for co-op plans?
cause i think the president said he would consider it
so if he listens to you
would you still be against him?
n what do you think should be done to help working people who need health care?
should they just deal with it
          work harder
and if a expecting mother can not afford to take care of her self or child
          should she get an abortion
or just not go to doctor
and if she has a problem go to the er
          after child is born
if needs special care but parents make to much to get free care and can’t afford dr
i guess she shoud have never had a child couldn’t take care
so if your fine your self poor and preg,
          better to get abortion
no health coverage for un born child
i guess that why so many people have abortions
          no one in country cares
every man women and child for themselves
          ok
          just checkin

      • Sorry can’t check out your feed…. I’m too busy looking for smart people to do my talking. You really have a way with words. I tend to not judge others because they don’t speak up for whatever reason………..just their presence is enough for me.

      • and what politician do you think is going to engage in a discussion with us mere citizens?
Better to carry signs that they cant help reading; better to carry a few real ripe tomatoes to fling at them!

      • Michelle is right. ALL dissent is needed and should ENCOURAGED. This is where leadership is needed….to motivate perpetual pessimists and point the way to success.

  2. Let me know what is going on with this organization

    • This organizations are there and, many more will come out, to fight for less government intervention in our private life and most important to fight for liberty. The march to Washington is a MUST!

  3. We need to get this huge. Liberty might not be easy right now but it is worth fighting for.

    • Does anyone have any ideas of how people like me who cannot possibly go to DC can have our voice counted at this march?
Maybe a website where we can sign in and it could then be sent to the white house?
I REALLY want to be counted!!!!

  4. Reservations have been made and my wife and I will be in Washington for the 9/12 March. My first time being a political activist. Silent no longer! I love my country and the ones who have sacrificed so much for its freedom. It’s time to stand up and take it back!

    • Hi, Gary!

I agree! My dad passed away almost four years ago, and my mother just died in January of this year. If they could see what’s being done to our country, they would be heartbroken. My father and the Greatest Generation didn’t fight in World War II to have this country belittled and destroyed as we are seeing happen before our very eyes. This situation is SERIOUS and VERY SCARY. My parents would be inspired, as I am, to see hundreds of thousands of Americans rising up against this tyranny.

Keep up the good work! See you in Washington on 9-12!!

      Susan Lee
      Danville, Virginia

      • i will be staying in Richmond Va. Can you tell me how you are going to get into DC? Park where and take the metro to where.? Someone said to the mall. I have no idea what then? . I’m sure the Capitol is a huge place . I’d really like to know where to met all the marchers.
        Please help if you can.
        Thanks,
        Karlene

        • check out resistnet.com

          Friday, 9-11:
Morning: September 11th Never Forget memorial
Afternoon: Grassroots leadership training and Grassroots Activism seminars
Evening: Freedomworks Dinner or Explore DC

          Saturday, 9-12:
8:00am Set up for stages and volunteers
9:30am Lining up for march at Lincoln Memorial
10:30am March begins at Lincoln Memorial and ends at the U.S. Capitol Building
1:00pm Event/Protest Rally Starts at U.S. Capitol Lawn

          • To make the Sept. 12th event more “eventful”, may I suggest the following:

            1. A day or two before the 12th, have Primary Meeting areas OUTSIDE of Washington where encapments of Protestors are Gathering. Much like an approaching invading Army might do. Set up Camps and Define Routes which will be taken once the advancement on the Capital is put in motion. Prime areas may include, Gettysburg, PA, Manassas, VA, etc. All battlegrounds, and all very Steeped in the history of this country as Turning Points in her history.

            2. On the 12th, turn the incoming freeways into parking lots. Amass vehicles on major Interstates and Highways. Obey all Traffic Laws, but preserve your fuel by moving at a very modest pace as the movement approaches its target.

            3. Identify and assemble smaller groups at Senator/Congress households in and around D.C. These groups would be pressed into service to Chronicle the Interrogation of each member of Congress on their stance related to the Constitution. Again, Obey all Local Laws, but demand access, as this will be a Saturday, and everyone knows that Congress doesn’t work on Weekends, unless they are voting on their own pay increases.

            4. When in D.C., remember decorem. Assemble peacefully, yet forcefully. I can imagine “regiments” of protestors (100 to 500 strong, each) being sent one-by-one, from Lincoln to Capitol Hill. A nice scenario would be to arrange by State with a large Flag at the front of each regiment, for example. (another would be by generation)

            5. Ammunition. Each protestor MUST Leave behind a Personal Letter or Demand at the Capitol. One way of performing such an act would be similar to the processions we see when a former President lies in State. A well-organized procession, by State or Generation, single-file. There would remain 50 (if by State)Piles of Letters at the Designated dropping point on the Steps of the Capitol. Since Postage has gone up, American preferred delivery method for a matter of this Importance is “Hand-Delivered”. To make the submission more appealing, a demand on Congress for individual “receipts” shall be requested in advance.

Well, that’s my contribution to this monumental event. What’s Yours?

            David
            Ohio

        • Karlene -
Get a map of downtown DC and include a Metro map. (google it and use map qwest) The Metro can be picked up in Northern VA…Van Dorn or Franconia-Springfield stations (blue line) and you can take that line all the way to Capitol South Station which will bring you to a few blocks from the Capitol and the Mall. And there are many other Metro sites that stop near the mall as well and possibly the other protest sites. Good luck!
I’m so excited to see all of your excitement in coming to DC! This might make it more personal for the Feds to see that the movement is going strong and not likely to stop until they shape up or are shipped out!! Power to the PEOPLE!!!!!
          Lisa

      • Susan,
My dad just died in May. He WAS heartbroken to see what is happening to this country. He also was a WW2 Vet. My mom does what she can at age 83 but she is so frustrated and feels bad for us and our children having to live in a world the ONE is creating destroying liberty and the Constitution. My condolences to you in losing your parents. They truly were the greatest generation. I am as involved as I possibly can be and wish my job wasn’t so demanding; still, I will try to help in any way I can. My website is chicagobluesgirl.com
        Take care.

        CBG

      • is it true guy who started this site is in health care buisness and his partner was fired after working for bush where he robbed the medicare program?????

  5. It is time to take our nation back…..the Founding Father’s left us a legacy and left us a responsibility to uphold the Constitution. So let’s ask ourselves ‘How are we doing with that obligation?’

Are we collectively fulfilling our duty to uphold the Constitution and are the elected leaders following the constitution and using it as their guide book?

Tell everyone you know whether democrat or republican, to do their duty and join the march on DC on September 12th 2009!

  6. It’s time for Congress to be subject to their own laws. We need to put ALL of them on the UNEMPLOYMENT LINE, and have the same kind of health coverage they want us to have- and be TAXED TO DEATH- They DO NOT REPRESENT US!-

    • I am tired of calling my representative and senator. All I get is a form letter saying that they will do what they want. Well in 2010 and 2012 they will hear me when I tell them “you’re fired!”

    • ok unn no more un employment line can do it on line

  7. Our reservations are made, too. July 4th Tea Party and then on to D.C. for 9/12!! Also our first time as political activists, but we just can’t take it any more! If we don’t fight for our freedoms now, it may be too late.

  8. To everyone that reads this. It’s time to replace the Republicans and the Democrats with someone else. Though the rank and file of both parties and some of the leadership are good, honest. hard working patriots the people in office have become so corrupt they cannot be changed for the better. Every day they violate the constitution and commit crimes against it and agains all of us. They are about more power to themselves and stealing all the wealth of the nation to line their own pockets.

To vote for a democrat or a republican is a vote to make things worse and they will not listen to us until most of them have been removed from office and replaced by someone that is from one of the other parties (Libertarian party, Constitutionalist party, Taxpayers party etc.).

All of us see these other parties on our ballots and think ‘I should probably vote for that person but I don’t want to waste my vote!’. And so you do waste your vote by voting for the corrupt politicians that the national media champion. You make your choice by saying to yourself that this guy isn’t as bad as the other guy so I’ll vote for him. Please think about it, when you choose the lesser of two evils you are still voting for evil! And then they go to Washington saying they have a mandate to make things worse and then they do.

I’m asking the Libertarian party, the Constitutionalist party, the Taxpayers party and all other ‘independant’ parties to come together as one to create a large voting block of like minded candidates and support to challenge the republicans and democrats. You can’t do it devided, we have to do it together. I’m calling on all independants to vote for the candidates of this unified independant party, and I’m asking all the democrats and republicans that are dissatisfied with the candidates your party supports to vote for this unified independant party. We must replace the current officeholders with someone different, that will actually tell us the truth and do what they say or all is lost.

The democrats and republicans believe they own us and we have no other choices. They will continue to be arrogant and corrupt as long as we keep sending democrats and republicans to Washington and our State capitals.

Remember all the news stories we’ve seen in the last year. How many republicans have proven they talk about morals and what’s right but they do the opposite, steal from the government (that means you), cheat on their wives and are bought off by special interests or change parties to be sure they get re-elected because the peopl of their party are tired of their corruption. Look at all the powerful democrats that have been exposed for committing crimes like tax evasion, taking questionable donations from Fanni Mae and Freddie Mac or private donors and how instead of being removed from office and put in jail they get top committee positions or appointed to the presidents cabinet. Is this really the kind of leadership you want? If it is, we are already doomed beyond saving.

Do you remember that last campaign reform law passed by the congress. Do you remember how it was designed to protect incumbents from challenge, especially from the ‘third’ parties. That is because these professionals politicians are afraid of the other parties, afraid you might be so angry by what they are doing you might choose someone else. Well let’s scare the hell out of them!

The 2010 elections will be upon us soon and sooner than you think the 2012 presidential election will be here. We must organize now! We must change things by the vote now or we will be faced with for worse choices soon. Let us defy the conventional wisdom and show the pundits to be the fools they actually are.

    • Most intriguing idea. I’ve been a registered independent since the 1980’s and I feel dismissed by both parties. I’ve long felt that there should be more than two polarized dogmas, both of which seem to disregard the Constitution when it’s to their advantage. Please send me more information if available!

    • I like the idea of the independent parties coming together as one. We need a large, viable option to the Democrats and Republicans who are not serving in our best interests, only theirs. Now – how does it happen?

    • Wow, I couldn’t have said that any better. You are so right. America (I believe) is finally awakening!

    • Richard,
All that you say is true. Here’s the problem: 40% of Americans (the ones who pay no tax) are happy with their representatives. If we keep throwing ours out and they keep theirs in, we will lose what small influence we have. I don’t know the answer, but “throw em all out” is not it.

    • Hi there! I just wanted to say that I’m not on the 3rd party bandwagon. It’s a sure loser, always has been, and it’s the best way to lose our country forever. I am tired of the argument that Repubs and Dems are both equally bad – they’re not! There are many good Republicans and many who still cling to conservative principles. Jim DeMint, Mike Pence, Jeff Sessions, Michelle Baughman – the list goes on and on. There is no need to have a knee jerk reaction and vilify all of them for the sins of some of them. We need to REFORM the Republican party. This is our only chance. New leadership (Michael Steele – OUT!) and a new political leader. I don’t know who it will be, but there will be someone who will step up.

Please, please, please be careful in pushing the 3rd party thing. It’s going to divide and conquer this entire movement!

      • Michelle,

You are right. There really are some very good Republicans in office like the ones you mentioned and so many more, we need to publish their names and support the good ones. We must also inform the citizens who keep re-electing the bad ones about what their congressmen are supporting and encourage them to vote them out. Educate the public and promote good primary nominees. May I suggest the supporting many of our veterans who are running for Congress. Iraq vets for Congress is one website. These are True patriots who are disciplined, courageous, and have seen how a Country puts together a government together from a grassroots level. Throwing the good out with the bad is not helpful. See you in DC!

    • Richard I am with you. Many people I am linked up with here in Wisconsin also feel the same way.
Some feel Sarah Palin may be the person to help us start the new party. We have the numbers.

    • What we really need is a change in law to allow anyone on the ballot at all levels. No parties at all. The party system is corrupt beyond repair or replacement. That, and term limits.

  9. Lets make tthe March on Washington so large that it will make the Million Man March look small! Come on Americans stand up for your rights!

  10. The NJ Tea Party groups, 912 groups, and others are starting plans for charter buses to DC on 9/12. I will be there with my wife.

  11. It’s time for the politicians to hear us!

  12. We must vote the Republicans back in control in 2010. Barry a/k/a BHO will be slowed down alot with his evil doings. The most important reason to give the republicans back their power is the bill that is in limbo right now! Six sponsers so far. The bill will make sure that you have to prove with out a doudt that you are a natural born citizen. That leaves Barry out! No way will he be able to run again in 2012.

    • Yes, the Republicans! No 3rd party, as this tactic will divide and conquer this entire movement. The Republican party needs reform, surely, but don’t give up on the GOP!!!!!!!!!

      • Republicans have screwed this country and themselves in the process. Every time they open their fat mouths, they end up making fools of themselves. Rush “Don’t do Drugs, Oh Look a Pain Pill!” Limbaugh is a great example of the stupidity that has infested the Republican Party. You’re going to find yourself amidst a huge amount of 3rd party voters during the March. Me included. It’s time for America to become Independent and send both Republicans and Dems to the gutters. Yeah, I’m a registered Republican, but I’ve seen the light and it doesn’t have a Party. I suggest everyone else do the same.

        • We need to clean house with both parties. I think there is a lot of republicans that are not really republicans but democrats pretending to be republicans. Some I think has been threatened and some that has been bought off! This is why they are so quiet! Some just wants to keep their power and are willing to sell their souls to the devil to keep what they have. As for as the democrats well, they are just down right evil! I saw
          this evilness coming years ago.

We have a lot of people out there that loves this country so let’s encourage them to run for all the offices they can. Let’s clean house. They do not need experience just love of our country. Let’s start screaming to the republicans to get loud the democrats sure know how.

    • so they can keep up the good work
      8 more yeats
      haven’t had enough
      miss bush
      huh
      chaney is that you

  13. You can’t tell me you’ve read everything in a 1600 page bill full of legal speak and that you completely understand it, much less tell me you’ve made the best decision about it on my behalf!! Get out of my house!! All of you!!!

  14. My husband and I have been saying that when there’s a march on Washington, we’ll be there – well – we’ll be there on 9/12! We are excited to be able to DO something. We’ve been to the Tea Parties, but now it is time to let Washington know that we aren’t going to take it any more!!!

    • uhn aren’t going to take the country being re built after 8 years of hell
      ok
      end of recession
      housing picking up
      gm re hiring
      market up
      oh no must stop this
      an oh my gosh
      giving working people health care
and saving everyone trillions of dollars
and creating another surplus like clinton did
      he must b e stopped

  15. Carol,
Not meaning to be critical, but we can no longer vote for a person simply because they have an (R) after their name. Holding my nose til it nearly broke to vote for McCain caused me to remember that the lesser of 2 evils is stillevil. We have to demand Republicans with true conservative values or they are nothing more than “Democrats Lite” . RINOs do nearly as much harm as Democrats becaues they dilute the message of conservatism and harm the Republican name.
I want the House/and or/ Senate back as much as anyone, but not at the cost of continuing to “dumb down” the definition of conservatism as we have been doing. From now on it’s a conservatve or nothing for me!

  16. Patriots,

It’s time to make a committment to travel to Washington, DC for the 912 rally/tea party…..we need to put millions of boots on the ground…….we have some action going at http://patriotsforamerica.ning.com/forum/topics/are-you-attending-the-march-on

  17. I am a Cold War-era vet. The red clenched fists at the top of this website are reminiscent of Soviet Communism. Isn’t there a better symbolism to use than that?

  18. My husband and I will be there in attendance…

24Aheaddotcom- I believe there is a day on the agenda to meet with your representatives. I agree that some of the signs & hooplah at the tea parties can be counter productive. But it is imperative that we, the People, come together to show our opposition for too much govt interference in our day to day lives and the massive taxation they are trying to enforce on the People.

You are always stronger in numbers….both sides of the political spectrum have “extremists”….being there, standing up for what you believe is an admirable trait and I hope anyone that seriously feels like the US is heading in the wrong direction is in Washington with me and thousands of others in September.

  19. It is time for Americans to take their nation back! Let us march on DC!

This country is ours and does not belong to just a few in high places, whether they be republican or democrat or what ever else they may be!

Encourage everyone you know to be there in Washington DC on the 12th of September!!

  20. Just a note to inspire those that think they cannot make it on the 12th.

I was at a local Tea party on the 4th of July and spoke to people who were willing to sleep in their cars (in DC) because they could not afford a motel in Washington DC but they realize this is so important.
I spoke with one gentleman who told me he would hitch-hike to DC if he couldn’t find a ride and another person told me that his boss at work told him he could not have the day off…so he told his boss he was going anyway because this event was just too important.

So then what is stopping any of us from being there? Let’s do the right thing and show up in DC on September 12th and let our collective voice be heard…Loud and Clear!!

    • You are right Charles………whatever it takes. Four to a room, pack food, share expenses….. whatever it takes to get this done.

  21. Dear Americans: I marched on Wash DC in 1967 against the war in Vietnam. 60,000+ people were there. I now will march on Wash DC protesting the war on LIBERTY by the federal government elected Representatives and Senators who refuse to follow the US Constitution. This is not a tax protest to me. It is a statement to rediscover America and participate in the REBIRTH OF AN IDEA — LIBERTY. Please join us to defend our unalienable rights. The government isn’t doing it. We must do it. Thank you. Gerry Coleman, Raleigh, NC.

  22. Of Course we’ll be there! I’m tired of sitting at home complaining about what is happening to our country! It’s time for a new movement and that movement should be called C.O.W’s, CLEAN OUT WASHINGTON! So join the herd everyone, stop complaining and do something about it! Meet us in Washington to clean out the bard!

    • You are right Robin. After a successful tea party on the 4th…. NW Pennsylvania is energized. We are organizing a couple buses. $45 down and back….. very inexpensive option.

  23. Why is the march on a Saturday? Shouldnt it be mid week before they all get in thier private jets and fly home for the weekend at our expense?

    • We have Thursday and Friday for training, issue education and grassroots lobbying. These two days are your opportunity to attend workshops, connect with other people and storm the capitol to meet with your congressman and senators.

The March on Saturday is the culmination of the three-day event. Hope to see you there!

  24. There are many MAD American’s who want to build a new party and many who want to fix the GOP.

I beleive that the 3rd party option will just keep the Dems in power. This is what happened in the last election. Republicans could not stomach voting for McCain. He and many others who have been in DC are seen as corrupt and putting themselves and special interest ahead of the conservative platform. Many Republicans voted for Ron Paul or Obama instead or, just did not bother to get out and vote which handed the election to Obama.

The ONLY way to take back our country is to take over the Republican Party from the ground floor up. Become a precinct leader, Learn Rogers Rules and take over people! In 2010 and 2012 , we can make a difference!

  25. Oh, I wish that I could go. Can’t afford to now. I have to have a retaning wall put in on the side of my house because my neighbors run off is killing my shrubs and erodeing my lawn. I swear he is pumping his pool into my yard and the city can’t help. I also have to put up a privicy fence to help protect myself from my neighbor. He came to my door the other day calling me a fu**%ng bi*+h. Had to call the police. Long story but i’m supposed to let his sons destroy my property because they want to play tennis in front of my house which leaves them hitting our cars with the balls and stomping on my shrubs! Much much more.

Please take a lot of pictures for us.

  26. I live in S.Jersey and interested in attending 9/12 tea party in
Washington, can you inform me of any group in my area?

  27. To make the Sept.

    David

  28. As I stated on other comment venues, this event should be promoted as “The Mother of All Tea Parties” All like minded Talk Radio Hosts (Rush, Hannity, Levin, Boortz, Ingrahm, Hewitt Etc) Cable TV shows as well and every Internet site that has any common sense. Bloggers and Conservative Journalists alike need to get involved. Marketing professionals and consultants need to step up to the plate. This is our chance, we cannot let it slip away. This day needs to be so big that even the Liberal Media cannot ignore it !

    • Absolutely! Let’s do everything we can to make this the largest march on Washington EVER! We want to see all the highways to Washington clogged for hundreds of miles in all directions. If we get stuck on the highway we’ll just waive our signs and protest with the others around us and still get our point across while having a good time!

  29. This event also provides an opportunity for those concerned that Obama is ineligible to be president since he was not born in the USA and therefore can not be a natural born citizen. While tea parties have not focused on this issue it is of upmost concern that unless Obama can prove in a court of law that he is a natural born citizen we must continue to use whatever means necessary to remove him from office.

    • Though I agree with you that these steps need to be taken…this goes sooo much deeper that Obama. Do you understand where the chain of command lies? Biden would be our Commander and Chief…and if that failed it would be Pelosi. God help us….

  30. please have ted nugent, and sara palin speak

  31. Please bring with you your individual state flags. Let them see… that we come from all over the United States and we are united and let’s remind them that our Founders believed in State’s Rights too!

  32. Is anyone else going to DC from the St. Louis area. Havn”t seen any comments from anyone in this area.
I plan to fly up on 9/10 and back on 9/13. Hope to march with lots of other St. Louisians

  33. Sarah Palin is off working on her memoirs somewhere, so she wasn’t in the audience Wednesday to hear President Barack Obama call her a liar.

Palin is the most prominent politician to have promoted the idea that Obama wants to create some sort of Third Reich-style medical bureaucracy that would decide whether the disabled and the elderly deserve to live, or just have their health care terminated.

“Death panels,” Palin called them, in one of the most calculated, incendiary falsehoods of the entire health-care debate. It embarrassed even some of her fellow right wingers.

But it served its purpose, scaring the living daylights out of older voters and churning up so much anxiety over the summer that Obama was forced to address it in his speech to Congress this week.

The death panels rumour, said Obama, “would be laughable if it weren’t so cynical and irresponsible. It is a lie, plain and simple.”

In the same speech, though, Obama cited a few uniquely American anecdotes not too far from just the sort of thing Palin and her cohort are predicting:

    * An Illinois man whose health insurance was cut off in the middle of chemotherapy because an enterprising researcher at the insurance company discovered he hadn’t reported gallstones he didn’t even know he had. With his treatment cut off, he proceeded to die.
    * A Texas woman who was about to undergo a double mastectomy when her health insurer cut her off, citing an unreported case of acne earlier in her life. By the time she got the decision reversed, said Obama, her breast cancer had more than doubled in size.

These are common stories here, reported in the media just about every day.

    * The Los Angeles woman with lupus, fluid in the heart and pancreatic cancer who was cut off health coverage because of unreported earlier back pain (which she says isn’t even true).

And of course, it doesn’t have to be true. Or even remotely related to your illness. It just has to be in your doctor’s notes, or hinted at in your doctor’s notes, even if your doctor didn’t tell you about it.

The moment the insurance company finds it, bang! Your treatment is cut off. And the insurers really start looking for excuses once you get sick and start submitting costly claims (one insurer, Health Net, has actually admitted paying bonuses to employees who dig up reasons to maroon sick clients).

If your treatment is life-preserving, like chemotherapy, and you can’t find some other way to pay, you die.

The industry term for cancelling a policy on some sort of technical grounds is “rescission,” and it is probably the most odious practice of an industry known for some pretty predatory behaviour.

Now, imagine for a moment what the reaction would be if federal or state governments started directing public servants to comb medical histories for the slightest excuse to cut off life-saving care. (It’s not well understood abroad, and sometimes not very well understood here, but the American government is already in the health-insurance business, big time. Medicare pays health-care bills for senior citizens, and Medicaid, the state-run programs, pay to treat the indigent).

The answer is obvious. It would be called what it is: Brutal, near-criminal, disgusting, inhuman behaviour. Maybe even death panels. And it wouldn’t last long once the public found out.

The curious thing is, when private companies do it, companies whose profit motive is diametrically opposed to the well-being of their clients, the American public remains relatively supine.

This sort of thing has been going on here for years, and while the horror stories are denounced regularly by liberal activists and routinely retailed by Democrats in stump speeches, it seems to be regarded by the public at large as just business. As in: “Well, they do have shareholders to answer to.”

In the minds of many here, business is good for America, and whatever business has to do to make money is good for America, too.

Certainly you don’t hear much about health insurance rescission from Sarah Palin, or Senator Jim DeMint, or the Christian conservative leaders who are now mobilizing against Obama’s plan. They have various motives. Palin wants to be president. The evangelicals believe Obama’s plan will lead to publicly financed abortion. Others, like DeMint, have stated flatly they simply want Obama to fail.

But where great swathes of the public are concerned, the antipathy to publicly funded medicine is something else. Clearly, a lot of people here fear any plan run by their own government more than that of the most venal insurance company.

It’s partly the innate distrust of government itself among conservative Americans, and it’s partly the widespread American self-image as a nation of rugged individualists who scorn public handouts, as delusional as that may be (see earlier reference to Medicare and Medicaid, not to mention the ocean of public subsidies that flow from Washington).

Obama himself has been talking about a woman who sent him a letter containing a stern admonition: “‘I don’t want government-run health care. I don’t want you meddling in the private marketplace. And keep your hands off my Medicare.’”

“True story,” says Obama, when he tells it.

And sort of pathetic, given the stakes of what’s going on here.

The fact is, there is so little understanding of what really exists here now and what is actually being proposed that for Palin and her cohort, working against Obama’s plan amounts to picking low-hanging fruit.

After Obama’s speech, the Washington Post quoted a middle-aged woman sitting in the waiting room of a local hospital.

The speech, she said, sent her blood pressure up: “For every story he tells about somebody that doesn’t have insurance, there’s one you can tell about somebody who wouldn’t get treatment because the government wouldn’t allow it.”

Well, as somebody who lived for 40 years in a country that has one of the most strictly public health systems in the world, I know all about the shortcomings of government-funded medicine. But in all those years, I never saw anything like what the insurance companies here are capable of.

To borrow one of Palin’s attack phrases: “Downright evil.”
