The 09-12-09 Protest
It’s time to take the tea party movement directly to Washington, D.C. Please join thousands of local organizers and grassroots Americans from across the country as we gather in our nation’s capital to deliver a message to the politicians: Enough!
We’ve had enough of the out of control spending, the bailouts, the growth of big government and the soaring deficits. And we reject the future tax increases to pay for all of this spending and debt down the road. We are gathering on 9-12-2009 to deliver our message in person that we’ve had enough!

I think this should include something about what, specifically, is being protested, because its not clear from this explanation or the protests themselves. The explanations I’m hearing in the media are self-contradictory. A lot of the protesters are holding signs directly critical of Obama and saying they are there to protest Obama, but I’m also hearing a lot of others saying this is not about Republican or Democrat, this is about the spending that has been going on under both parties for too long in all areas of government. Others still say it is a protest of health care reform. Clarification of the following would be appreciated:
1. Is this anti-Obama specifically, or non-partisan?
2. What are you protesting? If you are against government spending (not clear), what spending specifically?
3. If you are against deficits, do you support taxes as a means of reducing deficits?
4. If you are against taxes, do you support deficits as a means of reducing taxes?
Thanks.
1. It’s non partisan, however, currently the people in washington are predominantly democrats, if 4 years from now, a republican president continues the same policies we’ll have signs critical of him/her.
2. Many things, our current focus should be the corruption in washington and special interest groups. However, it includes limited government, fiscal responsibility, and following of the constitution. As to what kind of spending, consider this. People can only be taxed so much, government has a budget and there’s not really anything it can do to increase revenue (responsibly), so the government has been doing many social programs with money it doesnt have. Governments first respoonsibility is protecting its people, their lives, liberties, and property. It should be creating an enviornment of innovation, justice, and freedom, as long as those needs are met, everything is extra. In my opinion we can have extra, but as long as it doesnt increase deficits. Almost all of our spending involves the extra social programs though, so there’s a lot of room to reduce spending,
3 and 4. We want reduction in government spending to eliminate deficits, we’re taxed enough already.
Brett is like a breath of fresh air on this site. He outlined his issues coherently and sanely. But I think most people have a distorted view of what programs the government spends the bulk of its budget on. According to http://www.kff.org/medicare/upload/7750.pdf the biggest programs in the FY2009 budget were:
Social Security (22%)
Medicare/Medicaid/SCHIP (21%) (mostly Medicare)
Defense (20%)
Interest (8%)
That leaves 29% for all other government functions. I’m not saying that we couldn’t find some savings there, but if you really want to reduce the budget significantly then you have to cut back Social Security, Medicare, and Defense. Be careful what you wish for.
Well I get medicare…most of those people are the era of the baby boomers, which is why its costing so much in medicare aswell as social security. But I do not see the point in spending THAT much money for medicaid. Most of the people on madicaid only use it as an abuse of the system. Also, if we can not afford to pay for medicaid and medicare aswell as social security, then how does the governement intend to pay for the whole country. There is no way they will find enough savings in the healthcare system itself so that is but a bold face lie.
There is no Baby Boomer anywhere who receives Medicare yet. The post-war baby boom began in 1946. Even the oldest Boomers won’t get Medicare until 2011, and that will be just a trickle compared to those born throughout the 1950s.
Similarly, even the oldest Boomers have been eligible for the smallest Social Security payments for only one year.

For those who want to see what went on in Washington on this past Saturday (9/12), what kinds of people were there, what kinds of signs they carried, take a look at http://912dc.dhwritings.com/
You’ll likely find that the images and descriptions in the major news media are wildly off-base.
The money power preys upon the nation in times of peace and conspires against it in times of adversity. It is more despotic than monarchy, more insolent than autocracy, more selfish than bureaucracy. I see in the near future a crisis approaching that unnerves me and causes me to tremble for the safety of my country. Corporations have been enthroned, an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until the wealth is aggregated in the hands of a few and the Republic is destroyed … I feel at the moment more anxiety for the safety of my country than ever before, even in the midst of war.

I’m against all the military spending, I want spending cut in 1/2, does your group go along with that, and if not, cutting government costs is not really your groups goal. Also, healthcare is a major problem for America’s future, since you are against Medicare and government spending on all forms of government healthcare, what are your solution to the known forthcoming massive cost for all Americans?
